Isaiah 6:3

I.  God is holyBasic idea: separate, apart“Holy, holy, holy” – the MOST holyIn what sense? Isaiah 40:27-28-Eternal vs temporal (“The LORD is the everlasting God”)
-Creator vs creation (“the Creator of the ends of the earth”)
-Infinite vs finite (“He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable”)

II.  God is glorious“The whole earth is full of his glory”

Basic idea: heavy, weighty, worthy of respect and honor

By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified (Lev. 10:3, NKJV)

“Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?” (Ex. 15:11; see Ex. 14:4, 17)

III. God is love

“God is love” (1 John 4:8)

Basic idea: warm regard and interest in another

The very contexts that emphasize God’s holiness and glory speak of His loving care for us-Isaiah 40:1-2, 10-11, 29-31
Exodus 33:18-19; 34:4-7


IV. Extreme views of god

Deism: the absentee god

Pantheism: everything is god

Biblical view: God is holy, glorious, and lovingGod invites us to share-His holiness –“You shall me my treasured possession among all peoples…a holy nation” (Ex. 19:5-6)
“You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy” (Lev. 11:45)

V. What about god’s wrath?

God’s wrath is the expression of His holy and glorious love against that which subverts His glory and holy nature and creation.

But God is “slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love” (8X)

“In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer.” (Isaiah 54:8)Romans 5
